FYI, I was biking very close to the Tyrell Lot today at 909, going up at the beginning of Fong's Way trail, and 2 pit bull-type dogs came running to me, one of them stopped next to me and started growling in a threatening way. The owner showed up after a few moments, but never put the dogs on the leash, even after I asked him to until I passed them on the trail. The more threatening dog had run back to his owner and then back at me twice and was growling at me. He was a brown/brindle coat dog. Not the greatest way to start a ride!

I had an almost identical experience last year on bike head. I got off my bike and put it I between me and the dog no owner in sight. So,trying to figure out what to do and then the owner shows up way off in the distance, calls the dog back, the 2nd dog stayed back closer to the owner. The dog went back but you could tell the dog wasn't sure if he wanted to go back or not. Then the owner walks off the trail down in the woods never putting either dog on a leash. As I got back on my bike the dog owner was looking at me like I was doing something wrong, never a sorry nothing, no response, just a dirty look. The discription you gave of the one dog sounds about right but I think the more aggressive dog looked more like a Rottweiler? kinda hard to remember a year ago...either way it's not cool.
I have no problem with dogs and have had many dogs run over to me in the parking lot just to say hi and that's fine. However if you have an aggressive dog or at all threatening looking dog, put it on a leash!

The other dog was a smaller black pit bull. The larger dog could have been part rotty. The owner had a leash and also walked into the woods to get away from me rather than put the dog on the leash. I don't get it.

Similar experience last year down in The Gut with two Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

One of them had its nose on my calf growling.

I ride a lot with my dogs. Those ridge backs scared the hell out of me one day too. They have deep booming barks and came out of no where. Owner was pretty far behind.

i have run into the guy with the rhodesians many many times while riding with my 2 dogs who some of you know well - 2 tan mutts = cc and tonka. the rhodesians have always interacted fine with my dogs and myself. the owner is an older guy who i have witnessed training these dogs since he got them. that being said, caution is always a good idea. a bike makes a good shield.

I must have caught them on a bad day. The older of the two was fine. The younger was really aggressive. I love dogs but this dog scared the hell out of me. I stayed out of The Gut for a long time after that.

About a month and a half ago down in the gut two little terriers came after me, one was trying to run around and bite me from behind. The owner (an older woman) appeared further down the trail, but never made any serious effort to control them. I chased the dogs down the trail, although the aggressive one was persistant and wouldn't give up easily, and then I continued on my way. I caught up with them again, this time she did have them on leashes. She was standing still but didn't seem to understand that they were blocking the trail making it difficult to pass. I did get by them but the one dog was yanking on that leash pretty hard and missed clamping on my leg by inches, all the while the lady had a scowl on her face at me like I was interrupting her day. I thought about taking her pic and information to report her and give her a verbal scolding, but I decided not to and put my friendly face on. Next time it will be a different story and I will be reporting any scenario like this.
