Any recommendations for good local classes? I'm in Highland and Poughkeepsie. I haven't found much, but what I have found seems to require a gym membership. |

Any spin class I've seen at a gym requires a membership. Just put the bike in front of the TV and pedal. My TV in the basement is now upstairs so I don't even have a TV anymore, maybe I'll watch the cloths on the spin cycle.

Add to that some Spinerval tapes or dvd's and you'll have a kick a** workout. They really do work you hard and, for me anyway, just watching regular tv bores me right off the bike.
Check with your local bike shop but you can usually get yourself a decent trainer without breaking the bank.
Have fun! _________________ C'mon!! |

A stationary bike watching tv is ALOT different than a spin class. I go a few spin classes in the winters months once there is too much snow on the ground. Some of the instuctors I've had, I have all I can do to keep up with them and most of the time I still can't. After an hour of non-stop pedaling as fast as you can sitting and standing, have either tons of resistance or none at all, following the instrutors directions, you will walk out of the class with your arse whooped. I can honsestly say even on the hottest mid summer day, it still doesnt compare to how sweaty I get when I do a spin class
The tough part is finding the right instructor. I took a class last year.........the guy started us, then he said ok, pedal hard for 10 minutes as he walked out of the room. You lose interest quick with that typ. You really need to make sure you find a good one. This past spring Lil Mort and myself took a few classes. She kicked our butt.
Beth.........Some of these gyms have 3 month deals............they know many people just want to hit the gyms in the winter............If you decide on a gym though, just ask if they have spin classes and possibly watch one or two of the instructors to make sure they do what you are looking for _________________ greg

I did a few great spin classes at Golds in Fishkill...it was very hard to
keep up. But whatever gets us through the winter...
Or you can invest all your gym savings into a good set of
studded tires....ice riding is awesome...just gotta bundle up.
We ride all winter long..so long as there's not much snow. _________________ Shut up and ride.! |

Thanks, everyone
I do have a trainer and several trainright videos. I guess what I realized (esp. through the Fats) is that, when I'm riding, I draw a lot of energy from other riders and am fueled by the collaborative nature of it. I have trouble pushing the pace when I'm alone.
I may check All-sport (or whatever it's called now). Their rates actually aren't bad (not hugely different from the Y, but much nicer facilities). I'll have to see if they have a three-month deal.
Greg, what gym did you go to? |

I belong to the MAC up here in Kingston. Its probably a little pricier than the Y, but but much nicer facilities.
Like you, I have trouble pushing the pace when I'm alone. A few years back I bought a trainer. I used it occasionally, but when I did, I really didn't feel the strong push. If you find a good energetic spin class, you get an amazing workout. _________________ greg

Damnit, like Kathy said. Get some rollers. You can't get bored when you have a real chance of falling off the things. |

^^
I'd give myself about a minute and a half until my head crashes through the large adjacent glass aquarium
Plus, the one good thing about winter, is that it gives my body a chance to finally heal from all those bruises! |

My .02 in that future thread will be NOT to buy studded tires.
They are for commuting and icy snow.
If you want to ride on ice you need to make your own. _________________ Pedal, b*tches!! |

I tried to ride in the snow last year and I ended up smacking my head into a tree.
Sorry, Kevin. It didn't make YouTube. |

a spin class is an efficient way (time wise) to get a kick ass workout in, and a good instructor will get you plenty motivated! |

My only problem with rollers and trainers in general, ITS SO BORING!!!
I've never done a gym spin class before, but have ridden a stationary bike at All-Sport, its not too bad when you have people to talk to and TV to watch. Anything beats a trainer in the basement with no TV its cold down there
So for those without gym memberships what are you doing this winter for training, or are do you plan to continue riding 3 times a week? |
