I found this trail "network" on MTB Project and tried it out the other day in the dark with a light which admittedly wasn't smart for a first trip. Anyway, all of the yellow blazes say "Foot Traffic Only" which made me think the management plan changed for this piece of land. Does anyone know? I also get the sense that people often post tracks to these apps that aren't necessarily legal mountain bike trails. |

As long as the trail isn't in a wilderness area, 'foot traffic' includes bikes...makes perfect sense, right? Onteora is legal as is nearby Jockey Hill and they can be connected with a short stretch of road. |

Huh. Come to think of it, there was no "only." Thanks |

Im sure the trails were tough to follow in the dark, especially this time of year and if youre unfamiliar. Great place though. _________________ Pedal, b*tches!! |

You're not kidding. The leaves really made it tough to pick out. I had to stop a few times to scout. Luckily the blazes are very regular and frequent.
I noticed something too: Not being able to see the ground actually helped in a lot of instances. I just kept motoring straight ahead rather than slowing and trying to pick lines around rocks and roots. Next time I'll try the eastern loop and try to connect to Jockey. |

The Onteora and Jockey Hill trails were originally designed by mt. bikers and one of the original places where mt biking decisions were made about biking in NYS. As previously stated all trails are open to bikes unless in Wilderness areas and even then the state might consider heritage corridors if the trail was once an old road etc. _________________ Definition of Stinky: My gloves! |
